Williamsport High School Student Wins in State Recycling Sculpture Contest

Hagerstown, MD (November 13, 2008)- Williamsport High School sophomore Vicki Johnson won a prize for best craftsmanship in the recent "Rethink Recycling" Sculpture Contest, sponsored by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). Vicki's chicken made out of aluminum cans earned her an iPod docking station. Other participating students and their entries from Washington County were Christine Bell (giraffe), Alexis Bowers ("Trash Monroe"), and Brandon Barlow and Tracey Forsythe (sheep) from Williamsport High. Participants from Smithsburg High School were Keith Elam ("Compasarius") and Lara Seidman (dress).
Williamsport High art teacher and advisement coordinator Kandyce Mizell Douglas said it was a fun and educational experience for the students.
"The students combined very creative ideas with increased awareness of the value of recycling. They were quite proud of their creations."
