C&O Canal Announces Great Falls Canal Boat Running Again

Potomac, MD- The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park will once again be running the Charles F. Mercer, a replica canal boat, near the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center. Trips aboard the Mercer will begin on Saturday, October 4th. The hour-long mule-pulled boat trips will run through November 2nd. The boat makes three trips a day, Wednesday through Sunday, at 11am, 1:30pm, and 3pm. The cost is $5.00 per person.
The Mercer was temporarily drydocked before Tropical Storm Hanna hit the park on September 5th, 2008. Six inches of localized rain and runoff caused by the storm resulted in debris and sedimentation throughout the lower stretches of the canal, as well as a 125 ft breach of the canal wall near the Anglers area two miles downstream of Great Falls. The Mercer was unharmed in the storm but remained on drydock until the damage to the canal was assessed and some of the sedimentation and debris could be removed. The canal is now rewatered from Violettes Lock, near Seneca, downstream to Great Falls.
