On September 16, 2008, join others in celebrating the survival of one of the world's largest killers - cancer. The event will take place at the Kauffman Ruritan Center in Kauffman Station, PA. Doors will open at 5pm. The meal will be served at 6:30pm with the show to follow at 7:30pm.
The purpose of the Fashions for Hope show is to raise money for the Greencastle Relay for Life 2009.
The meal will be served family style by the Kauffman Ruritan kitchen staff and consists of chicken, ham, parslied potatoes, green beans & ham, pepper slaw, rolls, butter, coffee, iced tea, water, and cake & ice cream for dessert. The Dress Barn, Garland Groh Boulevard in Hagerstown, will furnish the clothing. New this year, Carolyn Tuttle of CJT Designs; and Jo Creager & Christine Albert of C & B Creations they will be displaying and selling their jewelry designs and will be donating a portion of profits made that evening to the Fashion Show/Relay for Life event. Also another first for this year is local Mary Kay consultant, Michelle Langston, who will be showing the latest Mary Kay products for our fashion show attendees.
Mark Weldon, income development specialist for the Chambersburg ACS office will be the evening's announcer.
The first Fashion Show "Fashions for Hope" was held in 2007. The idea came from the local Lioness Club, of whom several members of that club are also on the Relay for Life committee. "I thought it would be something different to do, so Marlene Duffey, Cora Crider & Brenda Uccellini started working with me, helping out with details to organize the show," said Darlene Higgins, event organizer. "The show began as a special way to honor our cancer survivors in Franklin County. We asked 12 ladies, cancer survivors, to be our models for the evening. They ranged in age from 82 to 34 years old."
When asked why this event is special to Darlene, she said, "The relay cause is special to me because my father had thyroid cancer when I was only 6 years old, and at that age, I didn't understand much of what he went thru. He was in a hospital in Philadelphia, because the treatment/surgery he needed wasn't available in this area at that time - back in the early 1960's. I didn't understand why my mom had to leave early in the morning every day and come home late at night only to do the same routine daily for almost 2 weeks. I stayed with my grandparents and never saw her much at all those 2 weeks. We have had a Relay for Life team for 10 years now, and of our original team members, 5 of those have been affected by cancer and have passed away from it. This is why I relay - for our family member who have died of cancer and those who have survived."
Darlene said, "During the event's program, we will have a special time of remembrance, honoring our 2007 models who were the "pioneers" of the event last year. These ladies helped us with our first effort at a totally new event (for us) and they did a fantastic job!
"Their names: Kelly Spinner, Betty Daley, Mary Bock, Susie Sherrill, Jean Leckron, Myrtle Hartle, Dorothy Kay, Shirley Rice, Raetta Thomas, Tena Karinshak, Brandi South & Sabine Nave. We hope that they will come to the show so that we can thank them appropriately!"
This year's models (all cancer survivors) are: Cora Crider, Phyllis Keller, Faye Mentzer, Sharon Luchs, Faith Anderson, Sonia Blair, Sharon Hykes, Rose Davis, Diane Hughes, June Cook, Jean Clark, Barbara Eshleman, Kim Muller, Angie Summers, and Angie Wyatt.
"I feel this is an important event for the relay and also for the community because it shows that for the most part, there is life after a cancer diagnosis/treatment.
"These ladies are special," said Darlene.
Throughout the evening there will be gift basket raffle offs. The raffles include: "Time to Relax" with a massage gift certificate, bubble bath, creams, a good book to read and more. (Greencastle Lioness), "Sunday Brunch" breakfast items, teas, coffees, special items & much more. (Kauffman Ruritan), "Mom's Night Out" with restaurant gift cards, movie tickets, gas gift cards, etc. (Jaywalkers), and "Cut the Cost of Inflation" with gift cards for gas, groceries, & more (Salem Church). Tickets for the basket raffle are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Door prizes will also be given throughout the evening. "So far some really nice prizes have been donated by local businesses/individuals with more to come!"

In Waynesboro - the Record Herald newspaper office, Walnut Street
In Chambersburg - the American Cancer Society office, 384 Floral Avenue
Deadline for tickets is September 8, 2008. Seating is limited to 240 people - advance sales only - no tickets can be sold at the door due to limited seating.
All proceeds from the dinner/show will be going to the Greencastle Relay for Life 2009 fundraising.
