New Wastewater Treatment Facility in Funkstown

Lancaster, Pa. (July 1, 2008)- ARRO, a leading engineering and environmental consulting firm, today announced the completion of a new $3.1 million wastewater treatment plant in Funkstown, MD, that will improve water quality and help meet new national pollutant discharge limits.
The new plant will utilize two Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBR), one aerobic digester, preliminary screening and ultraviolet disinfection in order to meet more stringent permit requirements set as part of the efforts of the Chesapeake Bay Strategy. The Strategy requires plants to decrease nitrogen and phosphorus loading to receiving streams which ultimately flow into the Bay.
ARRO led the design and managed the construction of the new 200,000 gallons-per-day plant which utilizes an SBR process to improve water quality to the Antietam Creek and help the town meet new National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit limits. The new plant replaces an old aerated lagoon, which was originally built to serve the town in the mid 1960s. The conversion to an SBR plant will also give the municipality the ability to reclaim the area now occupied by the old lagoons for another beneficial land use such as a park. The new plant has been operational since late May and is scheduled for final completion in July.
