Hilarious, Over-the-Top Farce Next at Totem Pole!

When comic genius Steve Martin discovered an old 1911 play by German born playwright, Carl Sternheim, a modern theatrical farce was born in The Underpants, which plays from July 1st through the 13th at Totem Pole Playhouse. Sponsored by Valpak of Cumberland Valley.
This third production of the 58th season at the Caledonia State Park professional summer theatre promises a sophisticated and silly evening of satirical comedy. "The 'wild and crazy guy' has taken a somewhat dusty and neglected nearly one- hundred-year old play and made it not only accessible but absolutely engaging for modern audiences," says director, Carl Schurr. "Although the time frame remains in the early 20th century, Martin has injected contemporary references and humor to the proceedings and the joyous result is a fast-moving comic treatise on society's obsession with standards of decency."
In The Underpants, a neglected but loving housewife becomes an overnight celebrity when while watching a parade she accidentally loses her undergarments in public much to the horror of her conservative husband, a most dedicated public servant. The result of this "original wardrobe malfunction" is the arrival of several gentlemen callers who come to rent a spare room in the couple's home but also to meet the young lady who has unintentionally created a city-wide scandal.
The husband and wife in question are played by Tess Hartman and Meyer deLeeuw. Visitors to the home include Robert Boardman as a poet who loves being in love with being in love, Ray Ficca as a thin asthmatic would-be suitor and Richert Easley as an elderly man who has ulterior motives when coming to rent the spare room. Barbara Pinolini is featured as a busy-body upstairs neighbor and an elegant unexpected guest is portrayed by Bob Crawford.
The modest, working-class home is designed by Paul Mills Holmes, Costumes are by Jessica Allison and Lighting is by Michael D. Domue. Paul Mills Holmes is also the Production Stage Manager.
The "Getting to Know You" Post Show Discussion for The Underpants is scheduled for Saturday, July 5th, following the evening performance. This lively, informal chat with the cast, staff, director and audience members provides opportunity to learn more about Totem Pole and life in the professional theatre.
