Put Your Faith Into Action!
Has your church or house of faith been seeking ways to get involved in the community - to put your Faith into Action? Would you like to see members of your congregation form stronger bonds with each other, and the church, by working together for a common cause?
Well, Habitat for Humanity of Washington County has the answers for you!
Working together in fellowship to help others in their community is what the mission of Habitat for Humanity is all about. This June local area congregations will come together to make the dream of owning its own home, a reality for a local family.
The Habitat for Humanity Faith House is an opportunity for people to grow in their faith and express their faith, while showing the entire community just what true faith in God can do! Let me share some interesting facts about the 2008 Faith House to be started this June on Lanvale Street in Hagerstown.
The Faith House is a Habitat house built almost entirely by the community of Faith. All churches and religious groups are invited to participate in this project and are encouraged to partner together for a common goal. This participation can be through financial contributions and fundraising, volunteering, providing skilled services, donating building materials and supplies, providing meals for work groups, and lifting up the Faith House and Habitat in prayer. Fundraising activities have already begun.
Contributors and participants will be highlighted in a special section of Habitat's newsletter, "Rafters". Also, sponsors contributing $3,000 or more will be featured on a special sign in front of the Faith House.
Did you know that this Faith House can be built by nine houses of faith sponsoring $5,000 each, plus donated materials and services worth $20,000 (i.e. flooring & installation, HVAC & installation, household fixtures, etc.) . Through the generosity, of Whirlpool Corporation, a new stove and refrigerator are donated to each new Habitat home in the United States and Canada. Habitat builds houses, but the true result is the changed lives of families. As the title of my column states Habitat for Humanity of Washington County is "Building Homes! Rebuilding Lives!"
Habitat for Humanity of Washington County provides decent, affordable housing to families in need in Washington County. Habitat is not a giveaway program. Partner families must pay back a no-profit, no-interest mortgage to Habitat with low monthly payments, and must contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity" working side-by-side with volunteers and staff. In addition to houses, families are provided skills to be successful, self-sufficient homeowners.
