Got Arthritis and Stress? Try Yoga!

April is national stress awareness month, and on Thursday, April 24, 2008 at 1pm at the Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland - the Arthritis Research Institute (ARI) and Sol Yoga will join together to teach a chair yoga class to help eliminate stress! This yoga class is taught specifically for those with limited flexibility. The good news...you do not have to be flexible to enjoy the benefits yoga offers. With a donation of $5 to ARI (a non-profit charitable foundation) you can participate in the chair yoga class and begin your journey to improving your body, mind, and spirit.
Dorcus Quynn says, "Most of us live in our heads, busy as can be, never stopping to take a few long breaths or stretch out our aching back and shoulders. Yoga is what you make it. It can be your hour of peace in a hectic week, a workout, therapy for an ailing joint, or it can transform your life if you let it."
Dr. Nathan Wei reports, "Yoga has been practiced in the U.S. since the late 10th century. Yoga has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety, and it is often recommended to relieve the pain and anxiety of chronic conditions such as arthritis.
Dr. Wei also notes, "Perhaps the first and most profound benefit that most notice with yoga is stress reduction. The next benefit is circulation. The benefits of yoga do not occur overnight but the results are lasting. Since yoga involves weight-bearing postures, the practice is especially beneficial to the musculoskeletal system and may help prevent osteoporosis, as well as assist in the management of other arthritis-related diseases."

The Arthritis Research Institute is a non-profit organization that funds both conventional and alternative research, provides resources to arthritis patients who are unable to afford their arthritis medications, and donates scholarships to children who have been diagnosed with arthritis.
