National Beef Recall Update

Hagerstown, MD (February 20, 2008)- The Food & Nutrition Services Department of the Washington County Public Schools, in continuing to monitor information related to the national beef recall announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday, February 17, 2008, was alerted today that an amount of the beef identified in the recall was used in the processing of spaghetti sauce that was shipped to WCPS from Carroll County Foods (CCF). CCF is used by WCPS as a commodity storage company. The company has acknowledged that the mix-up occurred in their storage area.
The spaghetti sauce newly identified today was served to some WCPS students on February 7, 2008, but WCPS has received no reports of problems resulting from use of the product. All unused sauce has been secured and the Food & Nutrition Services Department is awaiting direction for disposing of the product.
The voluntary recall involved more than 140 million pounds of raw and frozen beef products from Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company. A portion of the meat was distributed to schools nationwide through the federal school lunch program. WCPS did not receive any shipments of the beef identified in the recall.
