Greenbrier Elementary Team Wins Stock Market Game

Hagerstown, MD (December 20, 2007)- A team of four Greenbrier Elementary School 5th graders finished first in the elementary school category of "The Stock Market Game." Winning team members are Jacob Fishkin, Jeffrey Bennett, Zachary El Mohandes, and Brandon Potter. Teams from Maryland and the District of Columbia participated in the on-line simulation, investing a hypothetical $100,000 over ten weeks between October and December. Greenbrier's winning team produced a return of more than 27 percent over its original investment.
This team and others from Greenbrier's 5th grade math enrichment class, according to their teacher and advisor, Linda Forrest, "learned many aspects of the stock market and practiced critical thinking, negotiation, teamwork, and research. I was impressed with the students' discussions and decisions."
The educational competition is sponsored by the Maryland Council on Economic Education, with support from many national businesses. The winning team members' names will be engraved on a plaque that will be presented to the school. The team will be honored at a reception at Towson University in May.
