Hickory Elementary Named Maryland Blue Ribbon School
Hagerstown, MD (December 19, 2007)- Hickory Elementary School has been named one of six Blue Ribbon Schools in Maryland for 2008. The state and national program recognizes schools that perform at high levels and/or show significant improvement in reading and mathematics achievement as measured by Maryland's assessments. Rigorous standards for the program have been developed by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the U.S. Department of Education. Schools honored in the Blue Ribbon Program are recognized for high achievement in reading and mathematics or, as economically disadvantaged schools, are exceeding norms and dramatically closing achievement gaps of their students in reading and mathematics.
Hickory Elementary Principal Cathy Scuffins is honored that her school has been recognized. "This award is a credit to the hard work of the staff and students, the support of the Hickory parents and community, and the continued guidance, resources, and support provided by school system administration. It is a very proud day at Hickory Elementary School!"
"This is wonderful news for Hickory," says Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Morgan. "I am so pleased that the hard work of the staff on behalf of the students has been recognized."
Each of the schools honored in Maryland will compete for National Blue Ribbon Awards, to be announced by the U.S. Department of Education in September 2008. The other 2008 Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools are in Anne Arundel, Allegany, Carroll, and Harford counties, and Baltimore City.
According to WCPS Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education Mike Markoe, "We are extremely pleased that Hickory Elementary is in such select company. Mrs. Scuffins' leadership, the dedication of the staff, the support of the Hickory community, and most importantly, the excellent performance and achievement of the students, has earned Hickory a distinguished award."
