Nationals Announce 2008 Hagerstown Suns Coaching Staff

The Washington Nationals have announced the Hagerstown Suns coaching staff for the upcoming 2008 season. The Suns staff features former Major Leaguers with plenty of Minor League coaching experience. Darnell Coles will serve as the Suns manager, and Tony Tarasco will be brought in as the hitting coach to complement returning pitching coach, Paul Menhart. Completing the staff are Sergio Mendez and trainer Atsushi Toriida.
Darnell Coles joins the Suns after spending the 2007 season with the Vermont Lake Monsters, the short-season affiliate of the Washington Nationals. The Lake Monsters finished with a 38-37 record. He played 14 seasons in the Major Leagues with eight different teams. Coles won a World Series ring in 1993 with the Toronto Blue Jays. He also spent time with Seattle, Detroit, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Cincinnati, St. Louis and the Chicago Cubs. Last season was Coles' first year managing in Vermont. He spent the 2006 season as the roving hitting instructor for the Washington Nationals.
Tarasco spent the past two seasons as the hitting coach in Vermont. During his playing career he spent eight seasons with six different teams: Atlanta, Montreal, Baltimore, Cincinnati, and both the New York Yankees and the New York Mets.
Menhart will return to Hagerstown for his second season with the Suns. He pitched for Toronto, Seattle and San Diego during his Major League tenure. Following his playing career Menhart spent three seasons coaching at Western Carolina University. The 2008 season will mark his third year in the Nationals organization.
The Suns staff also features Sergio Mendez who spent 2007 managing the Nationals Dominican Summer League team and Atsushi Toriida, who returns as the Suns trainer. Jerry Browne, the Suns hitting coach in 2007, will spend the 2008 season with the Potomac Nationals, the High-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
