Motherbridge of Love
Every year thousands of children are adopted throughout the nation. For parents of these adopted children I recommend "Motherbridge of Love". There's nothing like a mother's love - whether you're with your birth mother of you're with your adopted mother. The difference between the two mothers is that they offer a - special kind of love. The illustrator, Josee Masse, shows this love in the faces of the two mothers and the child.
The sweet poem in "Motherbridge of Love" gives readers (the adoptive children) an answer to the questions that they struggle with - "where do I belong?" "who am I?"
The story weaves the lives of one little Chinese girl, her birth mother and her adoptive mother with inspirational and touching phrasing. "The first one gave you life; the second taught you to live it.... One found a home for you that she could not provide, the other prayed for a child; her hope was not denied."
This beautiful story, told in rhyme, was written anonymously by a Western adoptive mother of a daughter from China for the charity Mother Bridge of Love.
Masse's full color, breathtaking illustrations perfectly depict the transition from birth mother to adoptive mother. On one page, the birth mother is seen rubbing and gazing down at her pregnant belly while the adoptive mother hugs the little girl. On other pages, the birth mother is spirit-like when scenes switch to the Chinese girl and her adoptive mother.
Mother Bridge of Love is based in London and seeks to maintain a bridge between Chinese children who have been adopted abroad and their native culture. The charity's founder, the Chinese writer/journalist Xinran, has collaborated with Barefoot Books on the poem's publication. Royalties from the sale of the book go to the charity.
My children and I greatly enjoyed this inspirational story. My children recommended it to their two (adopted) Chinese cousins.
