WCPS Students Earn National Merit Scholarship Honors

Hagerstown, MD (September 24, 2007)- Three students from the Washington County Public Schools are semifinalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program and six others earned Commended Scholar status. Jordan Winters at Clear Spring High School, who was a student at Washington County Technical High School for his junior year last year, and Laura Baldasarre and David Kurz from Smithsburg High School were named Semifinalists after their achievement on the 2006 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Each of these students can continue in the competitive Merit Scholarship Program, vying for approximately 8,200 awards worth $34 million next spring.
Commended Scholars have also taken the PSAT/NMSQT and are recognized for their achievement. The following students received such recognition:
* Boonsboro High - Blaine Ford
* Clear Spring High - Kyle Byrne
* North Hagerstown High - Derek McAbee & Alex Knepper
* Smithsburg High - Charles Lee & Phillip Shriver
All of the above listed students were among more than 1.4 million who entered the program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT as juniors in nearly 21,000 high schools across the country.
