Shepherdstown to Host Third Annual Poetry Festival

Shepherdstown to Host Third Annual Poetry Festival

The Third Annual Sotto Voce Poetry Festival will be held in Shepherdstown, WV, on October 5, 6, and 7.
The festival will showcase three nationally known poets: Michael Collier, Steve Orlen, and Richard Garcia, and will include readings, a variety of workshops and tutorials, and a Saturday night reception.
All events will be free and open to the public.
The festival will begin the afternoon of Friday, October 5, with a discussion by author and literary consultant Amy Holman reading and an informal reception and book signing with her afterwards.
On Friday evening, Holman and Orlen will give readings and sign books.
Saturday, October 6, will be devoted to workshop and tutorials throughout the day, an open microphone reading, and an evening reception that includes readings by Collier, Garcia, and Katherine Williams.
The Saturday workshops and tutorials will include two sessions on poetry-writing (one led by Collier and another by Orlen), a session on ways to get more out of reading and listening to poetry, a session on fiction writing, and session with Holman on the ins and outs of publishing poetry.
There will also be a special poetry-writing workshop for children aged 8 to 15, followed by a public reading of the children's work.
The festival will conclude on Sunday, October 7 with a three-hour workshop led by Garcia.
The Sotto Voce festival was launched in 2005 to promote public appreciation and awareness of poets and poetry and to create a new audience for poetry in the mid-Atlantic region. Sotto Voce means "in a low voice, softly, in an undertone" in Italian.
The festival was founded and is directed by Shepherdstown's Hope Maxwell-Snyder, who was coordinator of Shepherd University's Department of Modern Languages for seven years. After gaining tenure, she took time off in 2003 to write full-time. She has published two books, a play, and a novel.
