Bread Comes to Life: A Garden of Wheat and a Loaf to Eat
George Levenson and photographer Shmuel Thaler have put together a fabulous book for children that clearly explains where bread comes from.
The full-color photographs and rhyming, bouncing text tells how a loaf of bread begins with a patch of wheatgrass. It goes on to say how the baker sows, grows, reaps, threshes, mills, mixes, kneads, shapes, rises, and finally bakes the bread.
"Bread Comes to Life: A Garden of Wheat and a Loaf to Eat" is a wonderful book to show children that bread begins somewhere other than the shelf in the bread aisle at the grocery store.
In the back of the book, readers can learn what else wheat is used for, as well as receiving a simple ingredient recipe for 100% whole wheat bread.
This book comes highly recommended by this reviewer and her children ages 13, 8, & 7.
