Rural Heritage Museum Announces Programs
Rural Heritage Museum, Sharpsburg Pike- Programs and events planned to complement "Key Ingredients: America by Food" - a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition have been announced by the Washington County Rural Heritage Museum.
The exhibition will tour six communities in Maryland from June 22, 2007 - April 12, 2008. The Rural Heritage Museum, 7313 Sharpsburg Pike, Boonsboro, MD is the first of six sites in Maryland where Key Ingredients will be on display from June 23 to August 4, 2007. Through a selection of artifacts, photographs, and illustrations, Key Ingredients examines the evolution of the American kitchen and how food industries have enabled Americans to choose an ever-wider variety of frozen, prepared, and fresh foods. Key Ingredients also looks beyond the home to restaurants, diners, and celebrations that help build a sense of community through food.
Open to the public on June 23rd, the exhibit is sponsored by the Maryland Humanities Council, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau. It delves into the historical, regional and social traditions that merge in everyday meals and celebrations at the American table. This gives the Rural Heritage Museum an opportunity to explore the unique food ways of our local area.
According to Rural Heritage Museum event co-chairman Dorry Norris, "Our succeeding Wednesday evening lectures will touch on First Foods From Field, Forest And Stream, The Heritage Of The City Farmer's Market, Hardtack And Coffee - The Civil War By Food, Fellowship And Fundraising - Community Meals For Profit and Your Food -Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow. Also, as part of Food, Fellowship and Fundraising, local nonprofits are invited to call, write or e-mail the museum with details to be included in a The Taste of Local Food handout."
According to Tom Riford, President of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau, "The collection and displays at the Rural Heritage Museum present a window to the past. Residents and visitors alike will welcome the Smithsonian's view of the historical, regional, and social-traditions of meals and celebrations."
The recently enlarged Four Square Garden and re-built Poffenberger log cabin will be central to an array of gardening programs sponsored by the Master Gardeners. Three designated Garden Days, including interpretive tours of the garden, will be highlighted by a special display of antique gardening tools. Master Gardeners will be on site from noon to 5 P.M. for Second Sundays in the Garden, a new program this year, a throwback to the local custom of visiting local gardens after church.
The recently completed fireplace at the cabin will be the site of a hearth-cooking program that will include chicken on a string and other early Midwestern-Maryland treats.
Local authors and organizations that have published cookbooks have been invited to display and sell them during Cookbooks, Coffee and Conversation. During the day-long program, sponsored by the Washington County Homemakers, German-themed refreshments will be served.
Antique cookbooks will also be on display.
Leading up to annual August Spud Fest, when children harvest potatoes all visitors are invited and to watch homemade ice cream and potato chips being made. A display of antique potato mashers will be shown in the lobby of the museum building.
Whether it was Gramma's coverall apron, your mother's cocktail apron or your father's butcher apron, these symbols of food service, rank, or affiliation, are all part of our food story. The public is welcome to bring their own special aprons and tell their stories at Who Wears the Apron? a Friday evening program
The local showing of this Smithsonian Exhibit will give the opportunity to explore the unique "regional" foodways that are Washington County's Heritage. All Key Ingredients events are free. They will be offered at the Washington County Agricultural Center, 7313 Sharpsburg Pike, Boonsboro, MD 21713 - where there's never an admission charge. For the six weeks the exhibit is in the county the museum will be expanding days they are open.
