BOE Nominating Committee Completes Work

On Monday, May 14th, the Washington County Board of Education Nominating Committee completed the interview process of five applicants for the vacant seat on the Board of Education. At the request of the Washington County Delegation, the committee had been asked to review applicants for the post when Board member Edward Forrest had resigned in April and to prioritize recommendations for consideration by Governor Martin O'Malley.
Five applicants had submitted letters of application to the committee. Following a series of meetings, the committee came to consensus with the following priority order which will be forwarded to Governor O'Malley this week: Donna L. Brightman; Gary E. Nally; Jacqueline B. Fischer; and Robin Schneider. Although Russell Williams had applied, he was not available for an interview and therefore was not ranked.
"All the applicants were qualified and enthusiastic," said Rod Shoop, committee chairman. "Brightman's history of involvement and community service with WCPS and the Washington County community impressed the committee and agreed to recommend her for the appointment."
Governor O'Malley will now review the recommendations and make an appointment for the completion of Forrest's term, which will expire in December of 2008.
Committee members, who had been appointed to represent various community stakeholders, included Bonnie Blandford, County PTA; Barbara Cecil, the County Citizen's Advisory Council; Merle Elliott, the Washington County Delegation; Roxanne Ober, Washington County Board of Education; Richard Phoebus, the Washington County Commissioners; Brien Poffenberger, Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce; Stan Stouffer, Washington County Teachers Association; and Mike Weller, Washington County State Senators.
