Icy Conditions Create Hazards in C&O Canal Park

Hagerstown, Md.- Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park Superintendent Kevin Brandt announced today that the cold weather and ice have made many of the park areas treacherous. "Many areas of the park are closed at this time," Brandt said. "The towpath and Capital Crescent Trail are ice covered in most places, as are most of the parking lots and access points. Visitors should be very careful in any area of the park."
Brandt also warned of the dangers of ice-skating in the park. "Ice skating anywhere in the park is at your own risk, and ice skating is prohibited in the Widewater area," Brandt said. "With the warming trend this weekend skating may become dangerous. Visitors need to exercise great care if they choose to go onto the ice."
Among the areas that are closed are parking lots at Edwards Ferry, Monocacy Aqueduct, Nolands Ferry, Point of Rocks, Lander, Brunswick, Mountain Lock, Lock 38, Snyders Landing, Taylors Landing, and McCoys Ferry. The Olmsted Island Trail in the Great Falls Tavern area of the park is also closed. Additional areas may be closed as conditions warrant.
