As 2007 begins, new programs are being announced by County Government and semi-annual funding for Fire and Rescue activities has taken place.
January Gaming Distribution Announced
On January 1, 2007 the Washington County Gaming Commission announced its bi-annual disbursement of gaming fund revenues to the Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association as required by Maryland State Law.
Gaming Office Director James Hovis said that the disbursement of $664,790.05 represents 50% of the gaming fund revenues collected during the first 6 months of fiscal year 2007, from July 1, 2006 thru December 31, 2006.
This figure represents an increase of 5.6 percent over the January 2006 disbursement of $627,493.41.
The Washington County Gaming Commission is a 7-member board appointed by the County Delegation to the Maryland General Assembly and Board of County Commissioners responsible for ensuring the revenue produced by Tip Jars played in the county's clubs, taverns, liquor stores, and restaurants is equitably distributed. Since its beginning, the Commission has provided over 31 million dollars to charities and fire and rescue companies in Washington County.
Christmas Tree Recycling
Again this year, Washington County residents will be able to recycle up to two Christmas trees per household at no charge at County landfill locations. Clean Christmas trees will be accepted from 8am-3pm daily through January 31, excluding holidays.
Trees are being accepted at Forty West Landfill, 1 mile west of Huyett's Crossroads off Route 40 on Earth Care Road, at the Greensburg Convenience Center, 13125 Bikle Road; the Hancock Convenience Center, 6502 Hess Road, the Kaetzel Convenience Center, at 2926 Kaetzel Road; or the Dargan Convenience Center, 2201 Dargan School Road.
This program, authorized by the Washington County Commissioners, is a service of the Solid Waste Department. For more information call 240-313-2790.
Photo Courses New at County Recreation Department
The Washington County Recreation Department has announced new courses aimed at improving photography skills, being offered during the winter class session. Registration is now underway.
"Fabulous Photos" will teach how to make greeting cards from holiday photos. Recreation Program Coordinator Marsha Moats says, "If you have at least 5 photos of an event you would like to share with someone special, this class is ideal. You will learn how to show off those great photographs and personalize your very own greeting card. Card, envelope and decorative supplies will be available. All you need to bring is five 4x6 photos".
The class can be a family project for parents and children 8 or older, and will be held on Saturday mornings in the Recreation Department's Conference Room in the ARCC on HCC's campus from 10am until noon. Participants may attend on either January 27th, February 17th, or March 10th. There is a $5 registration fee for each class, and a $7 materials fee to be paid to the instructor the day of the class.
A class on "Photo Organization" is designed to help organize and file photographs Moats says, "Bring all your photographs to this class in a bag or box. We will sort and organize up to 600 photos in a special safe box that you will take home with you. Pencils and dividers will be provided".
The class is offered to everyone, but children must be 12 years of age and older to participate. Classes will be held in the Recreation Department's Conference Room in the ARCC building on the Hagerstown Community College campus on Saturday mornings from 10am until noon. Participants may attend on either February 10th or March 3rd. There is a $5 registration fee for each class as well as an $11 materials fee to be paid to the instructor the day of the class.
