"No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem!" That's the motto of the SunBreeze Hotel located on Ambergris Caye overlooking the Caribbean Sea. This Spanish architectural style hotel, on the edge of San Pedro, is surrounded by tropical gardens.
The crystalline blue waters of the Caribbean caresses the shores at the edge of the hotel property. These waters are the home of three living atolls: Turneffe, Lighthouse (home of the Blue Hole), and Glovers Reef. San Pedro has been acclaimed as the dive and water sports capital of Belize and Central America. There is a restaurant at the hotel serving three meals per day from a varied menu of foods to delight every palate. I can tell you about this hotel because I have spent some time there. Manager Julia Edwards and her efficient staff are great people.
Why am I telling you about this in a column dedicated to Habitat for Humanity? Well, this lovely Belize resort hotel is making it possible for some fortunate couple to spend a vacation there. How does that happen? Simply attend the Auction Dinner fundraiser being held April 1 by Habitat for Humanity of Washington County and bid on this special item. It's a five-night vacation for two in a tropical paradise. And as its motto implies, it's a great place to relax and have fun!
This 13th annual fundraiser for the local Habitat chapter features silent and live auctions, raffles, other games, and a buffet dinner. Many other exciting raffle items are available including a 5-day stay for two at the Flamboyant Hotel, located on the Caribbean's Grand Anse Beach in Granada, West Indies; a custom-made doll house; paintings and signed, numbered limited edition prints by regional artists; autographed books; handmade quilts; hand-decorated antique chest; and donated items are still coming in from retailers, manufacturers, resort areas, restaurants, and many other sources.
The dinner auction begins at 5:30PM on April 1 at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Hagerstown. The theme for this year's event will feature a festive carnival atmosphere as "Habitat Goes To Mardi Gras." Ticket sales are limited to 400. The cost is $40.00 each, and they are available now by calling the Habitat office at 301-791-9009. Half of each ticket price is tax-deductible. Tickets sold out at the last two year's events.
The $42,000 raised last year helped Habitat to continue building affordable housing for low-income families. This year's goal has been set at $50,000. The homes are sold to qualifying families on a no-profit, no-interest mortgage. Families must put in 500-hours of "sweat equity" building on Habitat houses and participating in other Habitat projects alongside the Habitat volunteers.
