Imagine getting a phone call from someone saying he's with "Public Computer Systems" or the "Information Verification Agency." Or, maybe he says he's simply "Operator #63." These are pretty vague introductions.
But, then continue to imagine the caller tells you your banking information has been posted on the Internet. But, his company can help you get it off the Internet and out of the hands of scammers. All the caller needs you to do is give him your checking and savings account numbers. Would you give him what he's asking for?
The Better Business Bureau System has received calls from many seniors reporting they've received calls exactly like this one. They are the targets of this newest telephone scam.
"The Better Business Bureau of Greater Maryland has not received any complaints or inquiries yet about this scam from local seniors," said Nicholas G. Greaves, President of the local Bureau," but if it is happening anywhere in the country, it can be victimizing our people tomorrow. Now is the time to get the warning out to Maryland citizens."
These con artists are hoping the seniors they're calling know very little, if anything, about the Internet and how their information could have gotten there. They are also hoping to get their financial information through this scare tactic.
"Following are some common-sense tips on how to keep yourself and your loved ones from becoming victims of this scam."
Don't fall for tricks like these used to get your personal information. If you aren't quick on your feet and refuse to provide the information, in no time the con artist will go into business pretending to be you once he has your information in hand. Before you know it, he'll empty your bank accounts and charge up your credit cards, ruining your credit and reputation.
Always be wary of unsolicited phone calls requesting your personal information. You don't know who's on the other end of the phone and how he or she will use it.
The best advice is to hang up the phone. And, of course, before you do business with a stranger, check with a friend...your Better Business Bureau.
