Letter From the Editor: Mixing the Old with the New

Letter From the Editor
Mixing the Old with the New
by Jennifer Leese

Since I became Editor of the Picket News, I have been looking at ways to maintain the production of this caring and devoted free community newspaper. I hope you have enjoyed our newest additions...
With FOR KIDS BY KIDS, Picket News readers can enjoy fabulous stories and poems from talented Washington County students in elementary, middle, and high school grades.
A few months ago, we renewed the ASK ABOUT ANTIQUES column by Budd Moore, a school counselor in Washington County and specialist in the valuation of antique and collectable objects of the last 150 years. Mr. Moore also writes the EDUCATION TODAY column, which is published once a month during the third week.
A REEL VIEW by James Gullard, a film student at Towson University, sparks the interests of movie-goers with his well-written column that features recent box-office hits.
IT'S ONLY INK! column by me--not only tells you what a specific book is about, it also tells you how successful the author is at getting their message across to the reader.
THE PHOENIX FILES by the Washington County Humane Society was brought to play with the intention of making readers aware of proper pet care--"do's and don'ts" if you will.
We have received positive responses on all the newly added columns and hope to entertain you with our newest editions...coming up in November.
SCHOOLS IN THE SPOTLIGHT is just that. It will highlight Washington County schools and the staff and administrative personnel who teach and look after our young ones.
MUSIC IN YOUR COMMUNITY was brought about by the many press releases we receive here at the Picket. This column will be published once a month during the first week and will announce concerts and music events throughout the county.
COUNTY COMMENT will now be in our new section IN YOUR TOWN along with city news. Look for public hearing announcements, road closings, county commissioner news and more.
KIDS IN THE NEWS will highlight area students who deserve recognition for something they have accomplished in school, in sports, at home, in community clubs, community organizations and/or through music and theater.
As always we hope you enjoy your old favorites: DAZE OF MY LIFE, FISH NEWS, POINTS TO PONDER, BUILDING HOMES-REBUILDING LIVES, and more.
The Picket News invites our readers to let us know what you think. We are only as good as our reputation. If you have press releases/news in any of these categories, feel free to continually send them to the Picket. Please send comments to The Picket News, Managing Editor Jennifer Leese, 345 E. Antietam Street, Hagerstown, MD, 21740, or E-mail editor@picketnews.com.
