South High's 2013 LifeSkills Students Participate in Fire Safety House Demonstration

On Monday, Sept. 23, 2013 the Life Skills Students of South Hagerstown High School participated in a Fire Safety House Demonstration. The Hagerstown Fire Department along with the Fire Rescue Academy of Washington County explained and demonstrated how to safely escape a burning structure. Safety tips were given during the demonstration, such as checking and changing batteries in smoke detectors, never leave the kitchen unattended while cooking, and in the situation of a fire to always check doors for heat with the back of your hand before opening the door.
Students from the Fire Academy also, showed and explained the tools and equipment located on the fire truck and how they are used during an emergency. The Life Skills class was especially impressed by how quickly one Fire Academy student was able to put on 50 to 60 pounds of emergency gear in less than 60 seconds.
The presentation was very informative and was a great reminder of fire safety. We would like say a BIG THANK YOU for a job well done, to the Hagerstown Fire Department Engine 5 and the Fire Rescue Academy of Washington County.
