Cool Dixieland for a Hot Summer Night
The Chambersburg Area Council for the Arts will present three outstanding Dixieland Bands at the Capitol Theatre at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 19 at the Capitol Theatre. “Cool Dixieland for a Hot Summer Night” is presented with the generous support of Orrstown Bank. Reserved seat tickets ($12 adults & senior citizens, $6 students 18 and under) are available at the Capitol Theatre (717-263-0202).
Each of the three bands to be featured at the July 19 concert has their own distinctive sound. Starting off the evening will be Chambersburg’s own Capitol Dixieland Band, a favorite local group featuring Lynn Lerew on trombone, Tim Gotwald on tenor sax, Bob Steiner on clarinet, Bill Wilson on tuba, Jan Sulcove on trumpet and Sam Hepfer on tap drums. With their traditional Dixieland style, the group will play a variety of toe-tapping tunes.
Following the Capitol Dixieland Band will be the Dixie Lion Jazz Band, coming to Chambersburg from State College, where they are a mainstay of the popular music scene at and around Penn State University. Specializing in Chicago-style Dixieland music, the Lions have performed at Penn State Conferences, clubs and fairs throughout Central PA.
Completing the evening will be Washington, DC’s White Lightnin’ Washboard Band, playing New Orleans (or, as they put, “Nawlins’”) style Dixieland. A notoriously light-hearted quartet, White Lightnin’ includes the washboard percussion that lends an unmistakable rhythm to this style of Dixieland.
Tickets for the concert are $12 adults, $6 students 18 and under, and are available at the Capitol Theatre Box Office (159 S. Main St.) now open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. - 12 noon.
