Local Man & Monte Carlo Take 1st at Car Show

A ’71 Monte Carlo owned by Leroy Blackburn won first place in its class at the 2002 Carlisle All-GM Nationals, June 14-16, 2002, at the Carlisle Pennsylvania Fairgrounds.

Blackburn, of State Line, PA, displayed the Monte Carlo among more than 1,500 cars on the Carlisle Fun Field participant ballot competition. Blackburn has owned the car since 1990 and this was the third year that the car has competed in the prestigious national competition. Blackburn was among the more than 35,000 enthusiasts who attended the three-day event.

In addition to the Fun Field, the Carlisle All-GM Nationals featured several other attractions. Special guests Arnie Beswick and his 1964 GTO Tiger, a nostalgic pro-stock doorslammer, and Bruce Larson with his USA-1 Camaro, were part of a large indoor display. Another special guest was Jon Moss, manager of General Motors’ Special Vehicles Group.

Other events included free seminars; autograph sessions and Q&As with GM executives; the popular Women’s Oasis featuring massages, manicures, Basket Bingo and more; and lots of great activities for the kids, including their own parade.

The winner of the Give-Away car, a 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix with only 19,135 original miles, was announced Sunday. Next year’s Carlisle All-GM Nationals will take place June 13-15, 2003.
