Composer and collaborate on "The Little Mermaid"

Chambersburg, PA: The Chambersburg Ballet Theatre (CBT) Company will present the fairy-tale classic "The Little Mermaid" during Chambersburg's IceFest, on Saturday, January 29th at 2 and 7:30pm at the Capitol Theatre, 159 S. Main Street, Chambersburg. "The Little Mermaid" is a world-premiere ballet, with an original musical score composed by CBT's Artistic Director, composer/choreographer Lavinia Reid, and arranged by Dr. Dennis Ritz, professor of music at Shippensburg University. Call the Capitol box office for tickets: 717-263-0202.
7"The Little Mermaid" is unique among local performances in that its music has been composed over the past 10 months by Ms. Reid, orchestrated by Dr. Dennis Ritz, and will be performed live on grand pianos by two pianists, with a multi-percussionist playing a full range of instruments, and with a cast of 40 dancers, fully costumed and in blacklight, on the Capitol Theatre's stage. This collaboration has been a lengthy endeavor where a double-piano score has been created by Reid, which has then been scored by Dr. Ritz for percussion. It is Reid and Ritz's second collaborative ballet. At last year's IceFest they produced an all-original ballet, Gift of the Magi, also for CBT.
7Lavinia Reid began formal training in ballet and music at age seven, studying violin with Sanford Reuning, Frank Mazurek, Patricia Isham and others, and studying ballet, choreography and pedagogy with her mother, Alice Reid, co-founder of the Ithaca ballet in upstate New York. She also studied modern, character and jazz dance intensively, and had further studies in ballet at the Boston Ballet, and also with Tatiana Baboushkina and Rafael Grigorian. A prolific choreographer, she won a Ford Foundation fellowship from the Carlisle Project in 1989. She has worked with companies in New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Texas and the District of Columbia, choreographing almost 80 ballets and operatic excerpts. This is her 8th score composed for ballet.
7Dennis Ritz is Professor of Music at Shippensburg University and directs the Woodwind Ensembles. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in orchestral conducting from Michigan State University and the Master of Music Education Degree from Mansfield University (PA). His graduate concentrations also include oboe and English horn performance, music theory, and composition. Dr. Ritz is a composer and the author of materials, including Preband and Lettersongs, for students' first experiences with wind and percussion instruments. He is a College/University Music Education program reviewer for the Pennsylvania Department of Education and past president of the Board of Trustees at the New England Music Camp. He is listed in the 2002 and 2004 editions of Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Dr. Ritz is also an avid antique collector and instrument rated pilot.
