Scholarships Awarded at Smithsburg High School

The following two scholarships held by the Community Foundation of Washington County MD, Inc. were awarded to Smithsburg High School students in a ceremony on May 26th at the school.
The Young Scholars Award, established by Mike and Marlene Young, honors a Smithsburg High School senior planning to study education, business or music. Students must maintain honor roll status in their junior and senior year, and complete a short application process. Erika Gerhold will use the $400 award to major in mathematics at Salisbury University, working toward a career in education or business.
The Officer Christopher Nicholson Scholarship was created as a result of Christopher's tragic death in the line of duty as a Smithsburg Police Officer. Since that day, his family, the community and the Blue Knights of Maryland have worked tirelessly to support this scholarship fund, which was initially established at Christopher's alma mater, Williamsport. However, through the efforts of many, the fund has increased to include an award here in the community that Christopher served. The award at Smithsburg, initially set to be $300 was increased to $500 through the generosity of Christopher's mother and stepfather, Paul and Karen Highbarger. Sean McAuley has a history of leadership and mentoring, along with a commitment to continue a family path of law enforcement. He is an ideal Officer Christopher Nicholson Memorial Scholarship recipient. He plans to attend Lenoir-Rhyne University.
