Points to Ponder
Respecting Disrespect

"Going Beyond Disrespect" is the title of a recent web item that was forwarded to me. Apparently the writer of this piece was angered to the point of sending out a rallying cry to all Christians. The goal is to ban together believers to prevent a new movie, "Corpus Christi," from being shown in American theaters. The writer says that it is a "disgusting film set to appear in America later this year" in which Jesus and his disciples are depicted as homosexuals. "It's a revolting mockery of our Lord. But we can make a difference;" ... "Let's stand for what we believe in and stop the mockery of Jesus Christ our Savior."
My initial reaction was "why?" As the writer notes, Christ is "our Lord" and "our Savior." The world does not perceive Him or receive Him. Such things are foolishness to the natural man, "nor can he know them" (I Corinthians 1:14). A revolting mockery of our Lord coming out of Hollywood; well, what did you expect? It fulfills scripture.
"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (1 Corinthians 1:18).
In fact, if you study the scriptures, which Jesus Christ has fulfilled and continues to fulfill, you'd see that we are experiencing exactly what He said would occur.
"He is despised and rejected by men..." (Isaiah 53:4).
"The world" Jesus said, "hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil" (John 7:7).
"For it is written: 'I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.' Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?" (1 Corinthians 1:19-20)
I actually find it to be praiseworthy to see the mockery. Do we actually believe that those who despise the Lord and His followers can prevail over the sovereignty of God?
"Why do the nations rage, and the people plot a vain thing?... the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and His Anointed...He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall hold them in derision." (Psalm 2:1-2 and 4)
So if someone thinks that "going beyond disrespect" of the Lord is troubling to them, just think of what is in store for those who take lightly the mockery which they perpetrate. The psalmist continues: "Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, and distress them in His deep displeasure: 'Yet I have set My King on My holy hill of Zion'" (Psalm 2:5-6).
Here's how I responded by e-mail to those who forwarded their concern to me. "If you want to increase the attendance in the theaters and bring in more money to the film makers, go ahead and protest. The Bible says, "Don't answer a fool according to his folly." We can calmly note that no one would dare produce such a film about Mohammad, or Buddha, etc. Jesus said to expect to be despised just as He is and was. He said the truth would be uncovered. The reason why this kind of blasphemy against Jesus happens is because He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and says that no one comes to the Father but by Him. The condemned cry out and blaspheme. And Jesus warned in John 16 that in the world we would have trouble, but He has overcome the world.
"So what are you worried about? I've read the end of the Book...WE WIN.
"Fires usually burn themselves out, unless you throw fuel on them.
"Just a thought . . . Dennis"
The best way to defeat the power of evil is not to curse the darkness. Our weapon is light - the Light of the world.
"...having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation" (1 Peter 2:12).
