Youth Meritorious Awards

In its regular meeting on April 13 the Washington County Board of County Commissioners honored two students with the April 2010 Youth Meritorious Award, from nominations by the Community Partnership for Children and Families Community Outreach Committee.
Maggie Sullivan is the middle school honoree, and Nicklas Harvey is the high school student honoree.
An 8th Grade Student at Boonsboro Middle School, Maggie Sullivan is the daughter of Dr. Daniel Sullivan and Caroline Sullivan of Boonsboro and was nominated by Counselor Susan Fisher.
Maggie, a consistently high performing individual, is a distinguished student and talented artist at Boonsboro Middle, has participated in a Magnet Language Program for three years and takes Merit classes.
She is caring, cooperative, dedicated, hard working, conscientious and puts forth maximum effort on all assignments.
Maggie is also extremely creative. She was the school winner in a Peace Poster contest for promoting peace in her school, was selected as one of the downtown Barbara Ingram School for the Arts butterfly sculptors. She plays the oboe and was selected to be a member in the All County Band.
Maggie also enjoys sports, playing Club Volleyball and Lacrosse.
She spends time at Western Maryland Hospital volunteering and helping with patients.
Nicklas Harvey, a 12th Grade Student at Hancock Middle-Senior High School, is the son of the Arcie and Melissa Harvey and was nominated by Counselor Corey Alkire.
Nick carries a 4.13 Grade Point Average while participating in advanced level classes. He scored a 1760 on his SAT's and is a member of the National Honor Society and his school's academic team and also received honorable mention in the Maryland Distinguished Scholar Program.
Along with excellence in the classroom and community, Nick has displayed outstanding qualities as an athlete for the Hancock Panthers. He has been a three-time member of the all-county football team, earning honorable mention as a sophomore and first team defense as a junior and senior. He also received honorable mention for small school all state as a junior and senior and was a finalist for the Washington County Defensive Player of the Year. Nick also received the Wendy's Heisman award for his respective school and was recognized as the NBC 25 Athlete of the Month for November. Nick was well respected by his teammates and was named team captain of the football and basketball teams for his junior and senior seasons. He has displayed excellent academic achievement, community service, and leadership skills in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and in the community.
Nick has accumulated 221 community service hours while coaching sports in the Hancock community. He also works for the town of Hancock as a Certified Pool Operator and lifeguard at the Hancock Community Pool. His CPO certification allows him to manage the pool and he has displayed excellent leadership qualities while scheduling, leading meetings and training sessions, and dealing with issues that arise daily at the public pool.
Youth Meritorious Awards are designed to honor local students for academic and community excellence.
