In its regular meeting on March 9th, the Washington County Board of County Commissioners received honors from the United Way of Washington County for employee contributions of money and volunteer effort in the 2009 campaign.
Commissioners received the Day of Caring Recognition, the Outstanding Achievement Award, two Campaign Spirit Awards, and Campaign Coordinator of the Year.
Kathy Kroboth of the Permits and Inspections Department was named Campaign Coordinator for the Year at the annual awards event held February 19th, and Sarah Lankford of the Economic Development Commission Office received a Campaign Spirit Award for work she did on the Campaign Committee.
The County's Outstanding Achievement Award was made for raising at least 15% more over the previous year. Employees donated a total of $65,000.00 to the campaign in 2009, which was 35% over the 2008 total.
The Board of County Commissioners' Office, Hagerstown Regional Airport and the Department of Permits and Inspections all had 100% participation in this year's drive.
County employees were also honored with the Spirit award for the volunteer hours they spent during the United Way Day of Caring last October. More than 70 employees volunteered for that effort.
United Way received $1.57 million in donations in 2009, and over 700 volunteers spent about 3800 hours helping others through Day of Caring activities. Funds raised benefit 26 partner agencies in Washington County.
Former County Commissioner Greg Snook was co-chair of the 2009 campaign, along with Mike Harsh of Hagerstown Community College.
Employees give to a number of causes throughout the year by participation in programs such as "come as You Are" dress-down days, and Community Health Charities.
