Yes, It's that time again! It's the time for Habitat for Humanity to work on its annual dinner and auction fundraiser. In fact, the staff and volunteers have been busy working on it since its event last year. Each month, the committee meets to plan the event for the following year. It's a lot of work for a dedicated group of people.
This year, the 17th Annual Dinner and Auction in Washington County will have the theme, "Around The World With Habitat". The event will be held at the ARCC building, Hagerstown Community College on Saturday, April 10 at 5:00 p.m..
You may ask why we are announcing this a couple of months ahead.
Well, it is because regulars have been buying tickets since before the holidays and this event is a sell-out every year. This year we want you to know about it now because the deadline for ticket purchase is March 26th. Tickets are $45 per person, or $450.00 for a table of ten.
It is a real fun-filled evening with buffet dinner provided by Leiters catering. Don't miss the fun-filled evening with buffet dinner, silent and live auctions, games and raffles. Hundreds of items will be auctioned from golf packages to getaways, to jewelry, pottery, sports tickets, and baskets of goodies.

And what is this all about? Why do we do this every year? Well, it is very simple. We are trying to provide decent homes for families living in substandard conditions here in our community. Yes, it is true! Many live in decaying buildings, overcrowded conditions, or pay far too much of their income for housing. Maryland has a housing problem! Affordable housing is needed. This is true of our county, also. Together, you and Habitat, can address this critical problem of crowded, unsafe, inadequate housing for those living below the poverty level. With the concern and generosity of people like you, together we can make it possible for these families to find new hope. Together we can make home ownership possible and break the cycle of poverty.
Habitat for Humanity works on the following principles:
* Homes are primarily funded by contributions of money and in-kind donations of materials, services and land.
* Homes are built primarily with volunteer labor and the "sweat equity" of the approved applicant for home ownership. The applicant's family must contribute 500 hours of labor with Habitat for Humanity before taking title to the home.
* Habitat sells the homes at no profit and offers a zero interest mortgage on the home. Payments from the homeowners are used to build more homes.
If we work together in partnership to meet the housing challenge in our community, we will be able to providing decent, affordable housing to low-income families who pledge work hours in return for loans that enable them to purchase a home they could not otherwise afford.
