Youth Meritorious Awards

In the regular meeting of the Washington County Board of County Commissioners on October 13th, three County students were honored for academic and community leadership with Commissioners' Youth Meritorious Awards.
Students selected by the Washington County Community Partnership for Children and Families Community Outreach Committee. Winners in this round include Modibo Haidara of South Hagerstown High School for September; Samantha Staley of Clear Spring Middle School for September; and Emily Beach of Williamsport High School for October.
Modibo Haidara, a 12th Grade Student at South Hagerstown High School is the son of Mr. Aboucar Haidara, and was nominated by. Eric Evitts. His teachers say Modibo is a model student at South Hagerstown High School and a model citizen in the community. He is a Link Crew Leader at school, mentoring younger or new students in the acclamation process to South High, and was chosen as a Peer Leader to assist students struggling with personal issues at school. Modibo has a 3.77 Cumulative GPA and takes a number of Advanced Placement classes. He has also volunteered well above the required amount of Student Service Learning hours required of him for graduation
Samantha Staley, an 8th Grade Student at Clear Spring Middle School is the daughter of Wade and. Lisa Staley and was nominated by Counselor Earl Meagher. She is lauded as an excellent student who exhibits many leadership qualities. She has been on the Distinguished Honor Roll throughout school, and was selected as a S.T.A.R. award recipient in sixth and seventh grade. Samantha serves as Treasurer of the Student Government, excels in art, is a member of the jazz band and participates in her church's choir. She is very active in sports, including soccer, basketball and softball. Samantha is a very conscientious, cooperative, and highly motivated student.
Mr. Pauli Lazor nominated Emily Beach, an 11th Grade Student at Williamsport High School. Emily has a current GPA of 3.78 and spends her free time helping out with the Best Buddies program, where she befriends mentally challenged children. Emily is also currently volunteering her time at the Boys and Girls Club where she is very involved with helping the children on a daily basis. Her teachers say that she is a dedicated and hard working student who deserves to be recognized for her contributions to our community.
