Annual Pumpkin Festival
Annual Pumpkin Festival
Waynesboro: The 16th annual Renfrew Pumpkin Festival will be held Saturday, October 17 from 11am to 4pm at Renfrew Park in Waynesboro, rain or shine.
The festival includes a full day of activities and fun for all ages. Visitors will enjoy bluegrass entertainment by the Boro Boogie Pickers, pumpkin carving, games and other activities during the festival, which is a joint fund-raiser for Renfrew Institute and Renfrew Museum. A raffle featuring a variety of prizes is planned, and winning tickets will be drawn during the festival.
The ever-popular "pumpkin-chuckin" trebuchet will run throughout the day. Another popular activity is the scarecrow-making workshop. Participants may bring their own long-sleeve shirts, pants and hats, or use clothes provided. Straw and instructions are also provided.
Other attractions include games, face painting and a corn necklace workshop, where children create their own corn necklaces using needles and thread. Tractor-drawn hayrides and photo board setups provide fun and great photo opportunities.
A lunch of traditional black bean or vegetable soup, homemade bread, cider and an apple is included in the price of admission, which is $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 4 to 12, and free for children age 3 and under. Hot dogs, soda and coffee will be sold separately. In addition, a bake sale offers a variety of homemade goodies.
Pumpkins will be available for purchase, priced by size. A team of pumpkin artists will be on hand to help guests carve their pumpkins during the festival. Safe carving tools and adult supervision will be provided.
Area bakers may want to roll up their sleeves and bake an entry for Renfrew's fourth annual pumpkin baking contest. The contest has been expanded to include the best use of pumpkin in any baked goods such as breads, muffins, cakes, pies or cookies. Baked items can be sweet or savory. Judging begins at 11am, with ribbons and prizes awarded for the best entry, and for second and third place. Call Renfrew Museum at 762-4723 for contest rules and an entry form.
The event is underwritten by M & T Bank, and by Today's Horizon Fund contributors PenMar Development Corp., Nora Roberts Foundation, and an Anonymous Donor. Facility support provided courtesy of Renfrew Museum and Park.
Renfrew Museum will be open for tours from 1 to 4pm, for an additional charge. Parking is available in Renfrew's lower lot off Welty Road. Limited handicapped parking is available behind the Visitor's Center barn. For more information, call the institute at 717-762-0373 or the museum at 717-762-4723.
