What to Look for When Choosing
Adult Day Services

Adult day services offer support, services, and supervision to persons outside their home in independent centers, churches or community centers. When making a very important and emotional decision the following are some questions you should ask when visiting a potential center.

Is it clean? Odor free?
Do participants seem comfortable in their surroundings?
Is it licensed or certified?
Does the staff treat the clients/participants with dignity?
Does the staff have specific qualifications for their job?
Is there a plan of care for each person and how is it monitored?
Do the programs and activities match individual needs?
Does the center have a varied schedule of creative activities (inter-generational, pet therapy, community)?
Are they open during the hours you need them to care for your loved one?
Is transportation available?
Are there any special eligibility requirements such as age or residency?
What are the costs?
Will Medicaid, state or private funding be available?
Are there any additional fees for a bath, outings, etc.?
What are the written polices on fees and on emergency procedures?
Are there meals to accommodate special dietary needs?
Do they have planned communication with caregivers?
Is the staff trained in CPR and first aid?
Is the atmosphere warm and inviting?
Is there adequate space, furniture and equipment both indoors and out?
