Earth Day Announcement: Scrap Tire Recycling Event

Earth Day Announcement: Scrap Tire Recycling Event

The Washington County Solid Waste Department-Recycling Office announced on April 22nd, 2009, Earth Day, that it will once again offer County citizens a scrap tire drop-off day. Disposal/recycling costs will be paid by the Maryland Department of the Environment; residents will not be charged.
The event will be held Saturday, May 2nd at the Forty West Landfill, located at 12630 Earth Care Road off U.S. 40 one mile west of Huyett's Crossroads. Tires will be accepted from 7am till 2pm.
This year residents may bring in up to a total of ten tires per household. No tires will be accepted that are over 17-inch rim size with the exception of two agriculture tires. Tires not accepted for the event, such as racecar tires, commercial tires, or tires too large will be accepted for a fee at the landfill scales during normal business hours.
Residents will be limited to one visit per household.
Citizens are encouraged to dispose of tires properly when they purchase new tires. Recycling tires is beneficial in terms of saving landfill space, and in eliminating breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
The annual tire drop-off day is one of many forms of recycling open to citizens of the County, with 17 drop-off points for cans, bottles and paper, and e-cycling of electronics located at 40-West landfill.
