Volunteer Washington County announces the winners of the First Annual MLK Day of Service Poetry Contest

Hagerstown, MD-- In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Volunteer Washington County partnered with the Washington County Arts Council and the Washington County Public Schools to host a poetry contest during our community's First Annual MLK Day of Service. The theme of the contest was "Celebrating Dr. King's Legacy".
A panel of judges representing numerous institutions including WCPS, the Arts Council, Washington County Free Library, Hagerstown Community College, Volunteer Washington County, United Way and the Contemporary School for the Arts and Gallery reviewed the poetry submissions.
Volunteer Washington County is pleased to announce the winners of this year's poetry contest:
* First Place- Zora Chalkey, Boonsboro High School, 12th grade
* Second Place- Attiya Latif, Smithsburg High School, 10th grade
* Third Place- Claudia Jenkins, Boonsboro High School, 10th grade
The winning poems will be on display at the Washington County Arts Council from February 15 to March 15, 2012, which is located at 14 West Washington Street. A reception, in honor of the winning authors, will be held at the Washington County Arts Council on February 23 from 7-8 p.m. Prizes will be awarded and light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
