Chesapeake District of Civitan International Holding Annual Convention in Hagerstown, MD August 9-11

Hagerstown, MD -- About 100 members of the Chesapeake District of Civitan International will be attending their annual convention on August 9-11 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Hagerstown, MD. Sessions during the convention include board meetings, activity planning sessions, leader training and a banquet. The group is pleased to note that their keynote speaker will be newly-installed international 2013-2014 president Bob Robinson, a native of Perth, Ontario with a lifetime of service to the organization.
Founded in 1917, Civitan International is an organization of volunteer service clubs around the world, dedicated to helping people in their own communities in a variety of ways; from collecting food for homeless shelters or volunteering at local retirement homes. They adopted a special emphasis on helping people with intellectual or developmental disabilities in the 1950s. Through the Junior and Campus Civitan, the organization works to develop the next generation of leaders.
The Chesapeake District encompasses 29 clubs in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The mission of Civitan districts and district officers is to promote the long-term health and vitality of its clubs through implementing growth strategies for building new clubs and recruiting members into existing clubs, serving as a conduit of ideals between clubs and Civitan International. According to Jo Ann O'Toole, Civitan International Director and Chesapeake District Past Governor and Meeting Coordinator, "The Tri-State Civitan Club (Hagerstown, MD) has been planning this convention for about a year and looks forward to hosting all Civitans from the Chesapeake District. Clubs from the surrounding areas -- Martinsburg, Waynesboro, Chambersburg, Frederick, Thurmont and Gettysburg -- are also participating. Although a lot of business is conducted during these meetings, it is also a time to enjoy the fellowship with other volunteers and to share ideas that all clubs can use to make the world a better place."
The Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) secured the conference through a competitive bidding process, and will assist at the conference with registration and provide attendees with Welcome Packets that include Value Vacation Pass coupons for use at local restaurants and shopping centers.
The group chose Hagerstown for its centralized location at the intersection of two major interstate highways, which makes it easy for the attendees to take advantage of the many attractions in the area after the Sunday morning devotional session. Jo Ann O'Toole, one of the convention organizers, said many people were particularly looking forward to shopping at the Hagerstown Premium Outlets and visiting the Antietam National Battlefield.
The Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau is a 501(c)6 nonprofit organization whose mission is to help attract visitors to Hagerstown and Washington County. The CVB helps to create vibrant growth for the local economy by promoting, developing, and expanding the local visitor industry. For more information about Hagerstown-Washington County, see
