Kennel cough reoccurred at the Humane Society of Washington County

Hagerstown, MD: Kennel Cough has once again been identified in two rooms at the Humane Society of Washington County (HSWC). The shelter is asking the public to wait until after December 29th to bring in owner surrendered dogs.
The shelter previously had Kennel Cough in October. Although limited to two rooms, the shelter is taking precautionary measures to stop the spread of the disease. Stray dogs will be accepted in the shelter.
Kennel cough, or Bordetella, is the common name for canine tracheobronchitis. This is a highly contagious respiratory disease that affects dogs. It is most commonly identified by the dry hacking cough that may resemble honking, retching, a watery discharge from the nose. Symptoms of the disease are:
Dry hacking cough is the most common symptom
Cough may sound like honking
Watery nasal discharge
In mild cases, dogs would likely be active and eating normally
In severe cases, symptoms progress and can include pneumonia, fever, lethargy and even death
Unvaccinated puppies and young dogs, or immunocompromised dogs might experience the most severe symptoms of the disease
If you suspect your dog has kennel cough contact your veterinarian immediately. If members of the public are in need of financial assistance to have their dog immunized against kennel cough and other highly contagious diseases please contact the HSWC as the Animal Health Voucher program is available. The program also provides assistance for cat owners needing assistance to have their cats examined and vaccinated.
The HSWC would like to inform residents of Washington County that there are currently funds available in the DogSNIP program and the SNAP program that assists both cats and dogs. DogSNIP is a program for dog owners that are experiencing financial challenges and would like to have their dog spayed/neutered. SNAP is available for all residents of Washington County.
