Multi-State I-81 Corridor Coalition to meet in Hagerstown for fall conference, October 29-30

(Hagerstown, MD) - The I-81 Corridor Coalition will hold its Fall Conference at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center October 29-30, 2012. Approximately 150 people are expected to attend. The Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau is providing convention assistance to the group.
Founded in 2007, the I-81 Corridor Coalition is a partnership comprised of local, regional, and state organizations that are all interested in sound transportation planning. The coalition includes local governments, metropolitan planning organizations, and state transportation departments, as well as private sector and non-profit organizations. These partners are from six states the corridor runs through: New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and Tennessee.
The coalition last met in Hagerstown, a central location for all partners, in 2010. The agenda for the group's annual meeting includes presentations, workshops, and breakout sessions at Hager Hall.
Interstate 81, which is 855 miles in length and traverses six states, is part of the Eisenhower National System of Interstate Highways. Given its proximity to the highly urbanized and densely populated northeastern United States, the highway is one of the nation's leading conduits for goods movement and truck traffic. According to the I-81 Corridor Coalition's web site, "As such there are significant issues of congestion, safety, economic development, land use, and environment. Historical trends, increasing population, and greater development along the corridor strongly indicate a worsening of these complex transportation problems and thus urgently suggest a highly coordinated planning and management effort for Interstate 81."
The mission of the I-81 Corridor Coalition is to work together to improve freight and passenger movement through the corridor, making it a safe, efficient, environmentally sensitive, seamless, and intermodal network. The network will support economic development and encourage coordinated land use policy. This will be accomplished through the sharing of information and coordinated decision making, management and operations. "We are thrilled to welcome this group back to Hagerstown for its conference," said Betsy DeVore, Director of Sales for the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Hagerstown is centrally located for the coalition, giving all six states the opportunity to participate in this important annual meeting." Outside of the commitments and meetings taking place during the conference, the members of the coalition are encouraged to visit local museums, historic sites, and shopping and dining opportunities. The CVB is providing each attendee welcome bags and other assistance.
