County government invites public to visit the annual home show
By Norman Bassett
Washington County Maryland Public Information Officer
Washington County Government will have a presence at the annual Washington County Home Show, to be held March 10 through 12 at the Athletic, Recreation and Community Center at Hagerstown Community College.
County divisions, departments, offices, and agencies will attend and the public is encouraged to visit each of the booths the County operates, to learn more about the many ways the County is working to make building, buying or renovating a home an easy and enjoyable process.
Attendees will also learn about safety in the home and how to protect loved ones should disaster strike.
Scheduled to participate are the Washington County Division of Plan Review and Permitting, the Division of Public Works' Engineering and Construction Department, the Department of Planning and Zoning, the Division of Emergency Services' Emergency Management Office, the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), and the Citizens' Emergency Response Team (CERT).
Plan Review and Permitting
Representatives can help explain how the plan review and permitting process works for both residential and commercial projects. Information will be available on the following topics:
* Subdividing a property
* Zoning Ordinances
* Small residential building projects
* Examples of a typical residential plat
* Requirements of a grading plan and storm water management plan for a single-family residential property
Staff will conduct demonstrations covering Citizen Access technology and how the public can check the status of a building or land development project online.
Construction and Engineering
County staff will be available to help developers and residents with information on a variety of subjects, including the following:
* Inspections with information relating to code references
* Storm water management information and displays
* County (NPDES) National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit
* County Capital Improvement Projects past and future
County staff will be available to answer inspection related questions. Home Show attendees will have a chance to enter in a drawing to win a rain barrel.
Planning and Zoning
The Department of Planning and Zoning's booth will have maps including the following information:
* Urban Growth Area Rezoning
* Land Use Plan map from the Comprehensive Plan
* Preserved Rural Lands with handouts
Planning and Zoning staff will be available to answer questions.
The Local Emergency Planning Committee has been a Home Show participant since 1987, and has provided citizens with information on Home Chemical Safety over that time span. With the development of the CERT program in the early 2000's, the Office of Emergency Management has informed and educated the public on how citizens can protect themselves and loved ones during times of emergency and help first responders save lives and protect property.
This year, the new Citizens Emergency Notification System will be highlighted. This program allows citizens to sign up for notifications of significant emergency events via email, text or phone.
Hone Show attendees should drop by each of the County's booths for valuable information on what local government is doing for the community.
