Drive-In Movies Return to Leitersburg for Ten-Day Festival
Features 65-ft. Screen, Nearly 200 Parking Spots, Lawn Seating & Outdoor Recliners

Hagerstown, Maryland: Leitersburg Cinemas and the local events guide, What's NXT, are extending the summer movie season with a 10-day Outdoor Movie and Drive-In event. Each evening from September 27 through October 6, they will offer a double feature of some of the summer's biggest on-screen hits.
"We want to bring back the nostalgia of the Hager Drive-In, which was a staple of the community for 20 years," said Pieter Bickford, Editor-in-Chief of What's NXT. "The outdoor movie event is an affordable, safe and fun family experience unlike anything offered around town."
The drive-in theater market has seen a sharp decline over the years. In the 1950's, over 4,000 drive-in theaters were in operation nationwide. According to the United Drive-In Theater Owners Association (UDITOA), there were 357 "operational, permanently constructed, commercially operated US Drive-Ins" as of March 13, 2013, only three of which are located within 60 miles of Hagerstown.
"The conversion to digital is a very expensive undertaking, one which many drive-ins simply cannot afford," said Rich Daughtridge, co-owner of Leitersburg Cinemas.
The Outdoor Movie and Drive-In will offer three ticket options Lawn Seating, where patrons can bring a chair or blanket and watch movies under the stars; Drive-In Parking, which is the old-school parking spots many locals remember; and Outdoor VIP, featuring the popular VIP recliners from Leitersburg Cinemas.
"We are recommending that everyone bring a chair with them," said Andrew Larson, General Manager of Leitersburg Cinemas. "We expect the parking spots to fill up, so we have a specious lawn area for outdoor seating."
Mark your calendar for this unique event to be held at the old Hager Drive-In behind Leitersburg Cinemas, located at 20145 Leitersburg Pike in Hagerstown, Maryland. Movies will be shown rain or shine. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the first movie will begin at 7:15. Pizza, popcorn, hot dogs, nachos, pretzels, candy and soda will be available for purchase. No outside food or drink will be permitted.
Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under. Limited VIP seating in comfy recliners will be available for $12 (first come, first serve). For more details about the Outdoor Movie and Drive-In event, visit or
