Kiara, the One-year-old retriever mix

Wisdom From a Furry Friend
One-year-old retriever mix
Pawed by Kiara, a retriever mix

Hi. My name is Kiara. I am a one-year-old female retriever mix that is living at the Humane Society of Washington County (HSWC). I am beautiful with a golden red coat and warm amber eyes. I am a very loving girl and giving kisses and hugs is top on my list. I am very clever because I know sit, down, bravo, spin, and twirl with treat luring and I am very anxious to learn more. I am still a bit of a puller on lead when I am walking but I will get better at that with some consistent positive training. The folks at the HSWC suggest I go to a home with children 6 years or older because I have a tendency to jump up and I might be a bit too rough for a small child. But I am a very good girl and do love to be my people's side.
Did you know that many animals come to the shelter because they are lost? They call them strays. The shelter has a lost & found department. Anytime you have lost or found a pet your first call should be to the shelter so they put the information into their database and begin helping you find your pet or the owner of the pet you found. If it is during working hours you can call and ask for extension 209. If it is after working hours you can leave a message in their voicemail or you can go on line to their website at www.hswcmd.org, click on Programs and Services and click on Lost and Found in the Drop down. Fill out a lost and found report right there on line and it will be entered into the HSWC database in the morning.
To help get your pet home to you the HSWC has some suggestions. Check with your neighbors and shop owners/workers if you live in an urban area to see if they have seen your pet. Place a very readable sign with a photograph of your pet in your front yard. And always have current identification on your pet so if someone finds them they can call you.
Did you know that a lot of dogs and cats run because they are not neutered or spayed? That is right. So if you make sure your pet is neutered or spayed you might be reducing the chance of their running away and becoming lost. If you need financial assistance to have the surgery for your pet then call the HSWC. They have spay/neuter assistance programs and you might qualify for one of them. Call the HSWC at 301 733 2060 and ask about the programs.
Well, I will let you go now. Remember that there are so many wonderful pets waiting for you to come meet them at the Humane Society. Please come in to say hello and spend some time with me and some of my fellow adoptable friends. You might just fall in love and will want to take one of us home. I hope to see you soon.

The Humane Society of Washington County is located at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown. www.hswcmd.org. Ph: 301-733-2060. Fax: 301-733-0248. Interested in volunteering? Look for their Volunteer Application form online.
