Celebrate National Aviation Day on Sunday, August 1

Celebrate National Aviation Day on Sunday, August 19 at Hagerstown Aviation Museum's "Open Airplane Afternoon"

(Hagerstown, MD) - The Hagerstown Aviation Museum will present an "Open Airplane Afternoon" Sunday, August 19th, 1pm-4pm. This event is the perfect way to celebrate National Aviation Day, which was established in 1939 by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Roosevelt issued a presidential proclamation that designated the anniversary of Orville Wright's birthday as National Aviation Day to encourage citizens to observe the day with activities that promote interest in aviation.
"The last 'Open Airplane Afternoon' was a great success. Hundreds of visitors came out to the airport and enjoyed the afternoon looking over the museum's Fairchild aircraft collection," said John Seburn, museum president. "As the community works toward creating an open to the public museum facility, this is one of only a few events throughout the year that offers the public the opportunity to see many of the aircraft that made Hagerstown famous."
Bring the family to the Hagerstown Aircraft Services facility and climb into the cockpit of the Fairchild C-82 and C-119 Flying Boxcar. See other museum aircraft such as the 1943 Fairchild PT-19 WWII Trainer, and the 1928 Kreider Reisner KR-31 biplane. All of these were built in Hagerstown! Historical displays and films are located inside the large aircraft. Visitors can also view airport activity up-close with planes taking off and landing.
FREE admission, however, donations are appreciated. Museum merchandise, books, DVDs, hats for sale. All visitors receive a FREE museum magazine and a FREE 14" x 28" color poster of the museum aircraft collection.
Airplanes and displays will be located at Hagerstown Aircraft Services, 14235 Oaks Springs Rd. Hagerstown, MD 21742. From Route 11 at the airport turn onto Basore Drive at Tony's Pizza and follow the signs. For more information visit: www.hagerstownaviationmuseum.org or call 301-733-8717.
The next museum event is the Wings and Wheels Expo, Saturday Sept 22 from 8am to 4pm at the airport terminal. Info: www.WingsandWheelsExpo.com. On September 22nd, there is also the annual Hangarfest concert event at the Rider Jet Center from 6:30-10:30pm, live music by the East Coast's premier 80's tribute "The Reagan Years." Catered food available for purchase, cash bar, door prizes and, of course, dancing! For more information and tickets, see: www.marylandmemories.com.
The Hagerstown Aviation Museum has the largest collection of museum-owned rare and historic aircraft in the State of Maryland.
