Hagerstown, MD: Students in Lincolnshire Elementary School 4th grade teacher Ann Mathena's H-OWL 4 Hope group recently held a fundraiser for the Humane Society of Washington County, Inc. (HSWC). The students presented their donation to HSWC Manager of Development & Community Relations Katherine Cooker on Friday April 27, 2012 at the school.
Students held a Pennies for Pups drive and presented a play to other students in an effort to spread the word on their project. "The kids did this all on their own, said Mathena. "They designed the collection canisters, they promoted the project and then collected, counted and wrapped each coin." She continued, "I am so proud of them because they well surpassed their goal of $200.00 by collecting $344.62." Each class in the school participated in the collection of coins and the class that collected the most coins, Mrs. Gregory's 2nd and 3rd grade room, won a donut party. Mrs. Gregory's class was followed closely by Mr. Race's 4th grade class.
Group spokesperson Monica described the project. "We collected supplies for different animal shelters, created a play about a dog and then did an advertisement that was a song and dance that what the project was about." The students then performed the advertisement. A video of that performance and photos of the students can be seen on the HSWC's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Humane-Society-of-Washington-County/87973547694
"This was a really nice project for the students to undertake for the shelter," said HSWC Executive Director Paul Miller. "I want to thank Ms. Mathena for motivating the students, Principal Dr. Sonya Barnes for supporting the project, all of the teachers and students that donated to the Pennies for Pups project and Aaryan, Evette, Molly, Monica, Kameron, Carly and Marly for all their hard work." Miller indicated the donation was especially timely now that kitten season was underway.
