Kaplan University Medical Assisting Xternship class helps the Humane Society of Washington County

Hagerstown, MD: Students in Kaplan University's Medical Assisting Xternship class recently chose the Humane Society of Washington County (HSWC) as the recipient of their recent community service project. Kaplan University Department Chair Nancy Szwydek presented the student's donation of $262.00 to HSWC Executive Director Paul Miller.
The project was a Virtual Pet Contest that entailed Kaplan's students and teachers submitting photos of their pets into a contest for placement in a student created calendar. Each entrant paid a fee of $2.00 and the students voted for their favorites. The top 12 winners had the honor of being in the 2012 calendar and the top 5 winners received gift cards. Students designed the calendars and sold them for $15.00 each. The profit from the sale of the calendars was donated to the HSWC.
"This type of project promotes the team work ethic," said Nancy Szwydek. "The success of the project represents the success of the entire team and instills a feeling of satisfaction and cooperation for the students." The students have donated to the families of firefighters and sent care packages to the troops overseas in the past.
Kaplan University is located at 18618 Crestwood Drive in Hagerstown, MD and offers a variety of areas of study including Allied Health, Business, Criminal Justice, Design, Information Technology and Paralegal Studies.
