Roonie B. Moonie: Lost and Alone
Roonie B. Moonie was a brave little bee. He wanted to be just like his hero Christopher Columblebee. He wanted to explore while having fun. Mother B. Moonie, who worried as most mothers do, told her little bee to "stay in the open", "be extra careful around strangers", and "stay calm, listen to your feelings and use your head".
After getting lost, little bee finds himself in one scary situation after another. Will Roonie remember his mothers' warnings? Will he find his way back home or will a stranger lure him away?
Janan Cain, author and illustrator, has put together a wonderful story with the important messages of being safe, staying calm when lost, trusting your instincts, and listen to your parents - they do know what they are talking about.
Parents can't help but worry when their children are out. It's natural. We're supposed to do it. And when we teach our children safety rules and staying away from danger in the first place, we can only hope that they will remember the things we have taught them. It is important to teach our children to be aware of what's going on around you and learning to say NO is a huge thing. Respect is an important thing to teach your kids - but don't be afraid to teach your children to say NO to their elders.
This reviewer and mother of three highly recommends "Roonie B. Moonie: Lost and Alone" by Janan Cain. This vividly colored book would also work well in elementary-aged classrooms during National Safety Week or a safety lesson the teacher plans. Advanced beginning readers will also have fun reading this fantastic book by themselves.
