Artists Selected for Butterfly Sculpture Sponsored by CVB

At the recent "Take Flight" reception in Hagerstown, artists Gail Padgett and Veronica Nehemius joined the Convention and Visitors Bureau President and CEO Tom Riford in the unveiling of the winning design for the CVB's large butterfly sculpture.
The Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau is an "Emperor" sponsor, meaning that $5,000 has been donated to the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts fundraising project. "The CVB is very pleased and proud to be a part of this butterfly effort. The 30 sculptures that will grace Downtown Hagerstown will create a lot of excitement. The members of the CVB and the board of directors love the Maryland-themed butterfly, which was selected to represent Hagerstown-Washington County's winning design."
The large metal butterfly that the CVB sponsored will be brightly painted, using the winning design done by Padgett and Nehemius. Maryland Metals is the local company that will be producing the aluminum sculptures.
The 5-feet-by-5-feet aluminum butterfly will include a stylized Maryland flag on the butterfly's wings, and on the other side will display the words to the state song "Maryland My Maryland" and Black-Eyed Susans, the state flower. The design was titled "Fancy Flag."
The Barbara Ingram School for the Arts Foundation received nearly one hundred artist renderings from the community, and the CVB selected the Maryland-themed artwork that will be used to decorate the CVB's sponsored butterfly.
Proceeds from the Take Flight Civic Arts Project benefit the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts scheduled to open in August 2009.
