Maryland Weekend Retreat for Families of a Child with Diabetes

Maryland Weekend Retreat for Families of a Child with Diabetes

(Flintstone, MD)- Setebaid Services(r) in cooperation with Daniel S. O'Leary Clover Farm Diabetes Camp is hosting a Diabetes Family Weekend for children with Type 1 diabetes and their families at the Rocky Gap Lodge & Golf Resort in Flintstone, Maryland, February 22-24, 2008. The weekend offers families the opportunity to meet with peers and share feelings and ideas on raising a child or children with diabetes. It provides a support group and educational programs for caregivers while their children, the child with diabetes and their siblings, can enjoy fun educational programs developed especially for them.
The Diabetes Family Weekend encourages children and their families to develop a better understanding of diabetes so that they may meet its lifelong challenges with confidence. Parents and other adult caregivers (aunts, uncles, siblings, babysitters) may select from a host of educational sessions including new technologies in insulin pump therapy and blood glucose monitoring techniques. Daily living topics include sick-day management, dealing with diabetes in the school, and how to work with a child's teacher. Each session is led by a healthcare professional or diabetes care specialist. All of the children's sessions are staffed by early childhood specialists who are trained in diabetes care.
Gaining the information and skills to effectively manage diabetes is one of the first steps in the achieving independence, both for the child and their caregivers. Parents who are better informed know how to ask questions of their health care providers, how to assist their child's teachers, and how to avoid emergency situations. For children, learning how to maintain glycemic control in an age-appropriate way helps to foster greater self-confidence both at home and at school. The Diabetes Family Weekend enables children and families to develop these important skills while enjoying a weekend among people who share a similar experience of living with diabetes.
This collaborative effort joins Setebaid(r) long-standing family of overnight summer camps and family weekends offered at other locations. Setebaid Services(r) is a not-for-profit organization headquartered in Winfield, PA, whose mission is to provide quality diabetes education programs and support services for young people living with diabetes and their families.
