Master Gardeners Offer Winter Gardening 101 Series

The Franklin County Master Gardeners will offer "Winter Gardening 101" classes on Saturday mornings from 9:30-11:30am, January 10, February 7 and March 7 at the new Ag Heritage Building, 181 Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg. "Gardening 101" workshops are designed to provide basic hands-on gardening information and hands-on experiences for new gardeners or a refresher course for seasoned gardeners. For more information, call 717-263-9226.
The Saturday January 10 (snow date Jan.17) workshop is entitled "Get to Know Our Birds". Participants will learn about backyard birds, habitats and plants to attract birds, feeding and bird migration. Learn more about this popular wildlife hobby from a representative of the Franklin County Audubon Society. Cost: $5.
The February 7 (snow date Feb. 14) class, "Winter Sowing Seeds", will feature Franklin County Master Gardener Karen Brown teaching the practice of "winter sowing", for those who want a head start on gardening, but don't have the space or lighting to sow seeds indoors. Instead, winter sowing uses recycled containers that act as miniature greenhouses, in which to sow seeds outdoors. A hands-on class, each participant will create and take home their own "miniature greenhouse". Cost $5.
On March 7 (snow date March 14), Master Gardener Elmer Greey will demonstrate "Hands-On Pruning" at his Shippensburg garden that features over 700 different plants. Participants should dress for the weather, and bring bypass-pruning shears, to learn about equipment and techniques for pruning their trees and shrubs. Cost $5.
Pre-registration is required for "Gardening 101". Call 717-263-9226 for more information.
