Anna Shetler of Hagerstown, MD wins Maybelline New York Beauty of Education Award

Anna Shetler of Hagerstown, MD wins
Maybelline New York Beauty of Education Award

After an exhaustive nationwide search, Anna Shetler of Hagerstown, MD has been named one of ten national recipients of the 2008 Maybelline New York Beauty of Education Awards, an award that recognizes women who motivate, mentor and make a difference in their communities through the power of education.
At age 17, using money from summer jobs and fundraisers, Anna Shetler started a free dance program at three housing projects in Washington County, Maryland. Now her non-profit organization, HOODHOP Inc., (www.myspace.com/hoodhopinc1) brings dance lessons to kids in seven low-income housing projects all summer long, culminating in a neighborhood dance-off where the students perform. Several of the older children now help teach dance with Anna, who is currently a senior at the University of Maryland.
Upon learning that she is one of this year's Maybelline New York Beauty of Education Award winners, Anna said, "The outlet of dance has given so many individuals something positive to do (myself included) in a place where it is so easy to get into trouble. We have been blessed with this award and in the future we plan to buy a building and open an after-school program centered around the arts."
For her extraordinary work, Anna will receive a $10,000 grant earmarked to support her educational cause, along with the opportunity to have HOODHOP Inc. showcased in a national ad in People Magazine. Referring to the $10,000 grant, Anna said, "With this blessing we plan to continue our program, start a HOODHOP summer camp, and we will save a portion of it towards buying our building so we can start our after-school program for the arts."
To help in the nationwide search for the ten 2008 outstanding women who selflessly help elevate people's lives every day by working to support educational causes on the ground in their communities, Maybelline New York enlisted the support of powerhouse publications People, People en Espanol and Essence magazines.
"Maybelline New York knows that education opens eyes...and doors," observes David Greenberg, President of Maybelline New York*Garnier. "I am impressed with our Beauty of Education award winner, Anna Shetler for her commitment to pushing more of those doors open through her work with HOODHOP Inc. As a company, we couldn't be more proud to honor Anna and support her efforts."
Anna will be honored at a gala awards dinner in New York City on Thursday December 4, 2008 at the New York Public Library.
